What is the ruling on pictures found in newspapers that depict news, arts, and tragedies? Are they forbidden?

The preponderant view, according to us, is that images of living beings in newspapers and magazines fall under the prohibitions against taking pictures, as mentioned in the hadith: "The people who will be most severely punished on the Day of Resurrection are those who imitate Allah's creation," and the hadith: "Every painter will be in the Fire, and for every picture he has painted, a soul will be made for him to be punished in Hell with it," and "Angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog or a picture." These hadiths indicate the severe prohibition against picture-making and keeping pictures, and that they are among the major sins. The prohibition becomes even stronger if the pictures are of unveiled women. The prohibition is general and includes all pictures, even if they are for remembrance or of a husband and wife. It is obligatory to be cautious about this and not to be lenient.
