Should religion teachers focus on making students love religion in optional matters, or can they oblige them to observe the pillars of Islam without explaining why they are obligatory duties?

Allah Almighty is the All-Wise, the All-Knowing, and He has legislated everything for a wisdom. The complete Muslim submits to Allah's commands and prohibitions, whether the wisdom behind them is apparent to him or not. It is sufficient for him that Allah has commanded or forbidden. The manifestation of wisdom increases a believer's submission, but submission does not depend on it. This truth must be taught to others: that our minds are incapable of grasping all divine wisdoms. So, we hear and obey Allah's command, and if a wisdom becomes apparent, it is explained to increase faith and submission.
