Is it permissible to execute drug traffickers in a public square?

Undoubtedly, drugs are a great evil and a widespread corruption, and their consumption is unequivocally forbidden among Muslims. The ruler must combat this disease. Drug trafficking is considered a great corruption that falls under the noble verse: ﴿The recompense of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive upon earth [to cause] corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be exiled from the land. That is for them a disgrace in this world; and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment.﴾ [Al-Ma'idah: 33]. The corruption of drugs is greater than the corruption of alcohol, and the Council of Senior Scholars has issued a fatwa (definition) that the punishment for a drug smuggler is death. Therefore, there is no harm in killing drug traffickers in a public square; rather, it is permissible to deter people from this malicious trade that corrupts countries and people.
