Do the conditions and rules of visiting homes apply to the spouses' families, and what are the principles of a legitimate visit?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is not permissible to enter the homes of others except after seeking permission, whether the door is open or closed, and whether the person is a relative or a stranger. This is based on the Almighty’s saying: "O you who have believed, do not enter houses other than your own houses until you ascertain intimacy and greet their people." The only exceptions to this ruling are a child or a servant, and only outside of the three times mentioned in the Holy Quran. Everyone, including the family members of both spouses, must seek permission before entering. Permission is sought verbally, by saying, for example, "Assalamu Alaikum, may I enter?", or by knocking on the door. One should repeat the request for permission three times, avoid standing directly in front of the door, and refrain from looking inside the house.
