What are the nullifiers of deeds that Allah Almighty warned us against in His saying: "And do not nullify your deeds"?
Allah Almighty commanded His believing servants to obey Him and His Messenger, and He forbade them from apostasy, which nullifies deeds. The meaning of His saying, "And do not invalidate your deeds," is apostasy and disbelief after faith, which is confirmed by other verses such as, "If you associate others with Allah, your work will surely be annulled," and "And if they had associated others with Allah, then [all] that they used to do would have become worthless for them." Both major and minor shirk, such as a slight show-off (riya'), nullifies deeds. Among the things that also nullify deeds are: presuming to know Allah's will (ta'alli) and swearing that He will not forgive a certain person, according to the hadith: "Who is this who presumes to know My will (yata'alla alayya) that I will not forgive so-and-so? Indeed, I have forgiven him and nullified your deed." Similarly, self-admiration (ujb), and boasting about and harming others through charity, according to His saying, "O you who have believed, do not invalidate your charities with reminders [of your favor] or by injury."
