What are the characteristics of the sixty indigent persons to whom charity is given in cases of unintentional killing?

One who is permanently unable to fast for the expiation of accidental killing must feed sixty poor people, by analogy with the expiation for ẓihār. A poor person is one who has no wealth or whose wealth is insufficient. The method of giving the expiation to the poor is to feed each poor person half a ṣāʿ of the staple food of the land.

Whoever kills accidentally must free a believing slave. If he does not find one, he must fast for two consecutive months. If he is unable to emancipate or fast, then there is nothing upon him. This is the view of Malik and Abu Hanifa, and a position held by some Shafi'is and Hanbalis. In another narration among the Shafi'is and Hanbalis: if he is unable to emancipate or fast, he must feed sixty poor people, and this is done by giving half a ṣāʿ of the staple food of the land to each poor person, and he should not give one full ṣāʿ to a single poor person.
