What is the ruling on supplicating against one's brother for failure and a miserable life so that he may return to the path of truth and adhere to the teachings of Islam?

The general principle is that it is not permissible for a Muslim to supplicate against another Muslim, unless he has been wronged, in which case it is permissible for him to supplicate against the one who wronged him. However, his patience is better for him. There is a difference of opinion regarding supplicating against those who commit sins: some have permitted it, while others have forbidden it, saying that one should pray for their repentance, not against them, unless they have violated the sanctity of the religion. It has also been said that supplication against them should be while they are committing the sin, but afterwards, one should pray for their repentance. The preponderant opinion is that it is not permissible to supplicate against a specific Muslim who has committed a sin, unless he is an oppressor, in which case it is permissible to the extent of the injustice. However, refraining from supplicating against him is more preferable, and it is best to pray for his guidance and righteousness.
