What should I do after taking money from a Christian maid, thinking she had stolen my money, only to discover that the money was hers, knowing that she traveled a year ago and I do not know her address or the amount I took? Am I sinful, and how do I expiate my action?

It is not permissible to search a maid's belongings without her knowledge or to take her money unjustly. Repentance and seeking forgiveness are obligatory, and the money must be returned to her or to her heirs. If she cannot be reached, the money should be given as charity on her behalf, and this will benefit her in this world and the Hereafter. The amount must be estimated through diligence to be absolved of responsibility.
