The question

What should one do with a brother who sometimes prays, but not all the obligatory prayers or with the congregation, and should one continue advising him, even though the punishment for abandoning prayer is death, knowing the current difficulty in implementing hudud?

The answer

Preserving prayer is one of the greatest matters in a Muslim's life; it is a sign of his faith and piety. Whoever preserves it preserves all other obligatory duties, and whoever neglects it neglects others. This brother should be gently reminded of his responsibilities towards his children, that they are a trust placed upon him, and he must care for their souls and hearts by following up with them in prayer and morals. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "All of you are shepherds and all of you are responsible for your flock." Deal with him gently and persist in offering advice.
