Will a Muslim be rewarded for secular study undertaken with the intention of honoring one's parents and reforming the nation, and does it fall under the hadith: "Whoever traverses a path seeking knowledge, Allah will make easy for him thereby a path to Paradise"?
The seeker of beneficial knowledge is rewarded if his intention is sound, aiming to benefit Muslims and obey his parents. Studying beneficial worldly sciences may be a collective obligation (fard kifayah), and one is rewarded for it if the intention is to draw closer to Allah. The noble , "Whoever treads a path seeking knowledge," encompasses all types of religious sciences, provided the intention is to draw closer to Allah and benefit others. The knowledge intended in this Hadith is indeed religious knowledge. Nevertheless, Islamic texts encourage the acquisition of all types of beneficial sciences, and the seeker of beneficial worldly knowledge is rewarded if his intention is sound.
