Were Mu'awiyah and those with him aware of the two hadiths: "Whoever harms Ali has harmed me" and "Ammar will be killed by the transgressing group" during the fitna between them, and what is the legal ruling on him if he was aware?

Some Companions knew about the hadith "He will be killed by the transgressing group" concerning Ammar, but they interpreted it, as Mu'awiyah did when he said: "He was only killed by those who brought him." Although this interpretation was incorrect, it, along with other evidence, paves the way for excusing them. Ibn Taymiyyah says that it is not obligatory to believe that all Companions were mujtahids; rather, among them were sinners and wrongdoers, but their misdeeds are forgiven due to their numerous good deeds. Ahl al-Sunnah speak well of them and seek forgiveness for them, and they do not believe in infallibility for anyone except the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.
