If a patient's condition is critical and they cannot find treatment or the financial means for it, they are permitted to borrow from an interest-based bank only the amount necessary to alleviate the dire need. This is based on the Almighty's saying: "And He has explained to you in detail what He has forbidden you, except that to which you are compelled" (Quran 6:119), and His saying: "But whoever is compelled, neither desiring [it] nor transgressing, there is no sin upon him" (Quran 2:173).
