What is the ruling on honoring martyrs in Islam, and is it an innovation?

The martyrs do not need the honor of the living, for Allah's honoring of them suffices, as He, the Almighty, says: "And never think of those who have been killed in the cause of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision. Rejoicing in what Allah has bestowed upon them of His bounty, and they receive good tidings about those who have not yet joined them from behind them that there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve. They receive good tidings of favor from Allah and bounty and that Allah does not allow the reward of the believers to be lost."

As for what is required of the living, it is to prepare them, shroud them, and bury them in the clothes they were martyred in. It is also permissible to announce their martyrdom, console their families, and prepare food for their families, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did concerning the people of Mu'tah. This applies specifically to those who are considered martyrs according to Islamic law.
