The false oath (al- al-ghamus) is an oath sworn by a person who is intentionally lying. It is considered one of the major sins, and it is the oath "by which one wrongfully seizes the property of a Muslim, knowing that he is lying." The majority of scholars hold that no expiation () is required for it because its sin is too great to be expiated by the expiation for an oath. Rather, its perpetrator must repent and seek forgiveness.
