What is the ruling on an Imam who works as a government employee and receives a salary for his work?

It is permissible for the Imam to take the salary assigned to him by the state, because he has a right to the Muslim treasury (Bayt al-Mal) prepared for their interests. This practice has been followed by the predecessors since the time of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and is called "al-rizq" (provision). Al-rizq differs from wages paid from private funds. The Kuwaiti Encyclopedia of Fiqh mentioned the permissibility, without disagreement, of taking al-rizq from Bayt al-Mal for matters of worship whose benefits extend to others, because it falls under the category of good deeds and the interests of Muslims.
