It is permissible to dye hair any color except black, and there is no difference between young and old. It is also permissible to dye hair before the appearance of grayness, provided there is no harm in it, no forbidden imitation of disbelievers or transgressors, and it is not a form of effeminacy or imitation of women. The Companions differed on whether the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, dyed his hair or not. Dyeing hair without the presence of grayness is not considered a Sunnah (definition), but rather it is permissible as long as there is no forbidden aspect involved.
