What are the intrinsic motivations to avoid extravagance and wastefulness?
Allah Almighty informs us that He does not love the extravagant, and this is sufficient to deter them from extravagance, for they are stripped of Allah's love, and His wrath descends upon them. It is understood from the verse that Allah loves those who are moderate. These are the servants of the Most Merciful whose qualities Allah mentioned in Surah Al-Furqan, among which is moderation in spending; neither extravagance nor stinginess. Allah Almighty says: "And those who, when they spend, do not squander nor stint, but are ever in the middle course." Allah also urged us not to be extravagant or wasteful in His saying: "And do not make your hand shackled to your neck, nor extend it completely, lest you sit blameworthy and regretful." Here, the extravagant person is likened to a camel that has lost its strength, for whoever spends more than his income becomes unable to benefit himself or others.
