One must distance themselves from sins and major transgressions. One can refer to books such as "Al-Kaba'ir" (Major Sins) by Al-Dhahabi and "Az-Zawajir an Iqtiraf al-Kaba'ir" (Deterrents from Committing Major Sins) by Ibn Hajar Al-Haytami. Examples of actions that incur a curse (with references cited) include: usury (riba), alcohol, wailing (niyaha), bribery in judgment, men imitating women and vice versa, theft, killing a scorpion during prayer, and tahleel (a type of temporary marriage), tattooing, plucking eyebrows (nams), and teeth-filing for beauty (tafalluj).

Among the actions that lead to the Fire are: lying, envy, hatred, cutting off ties, turning away from one another, embezzlement (ghulul), drawing living beings, associating partners with Allah (shirk), and drinking alcohol and dying upon it without repentance (up to three times), and a Muslim abandoning his brother for more than three nights and dying in that state. One can trace the hadiths related to the Fire in the books of Sunan and "At-Targhib wal-Tarhib" (Encouragement and Discouragement) by Al-Mundhiri.
