Is it permissible to strike the face in martial arts when there is a protective mask covering the face and allowing for vision?

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade striking the face, saying: "When one of you fights, he must avoid the face." And the presence of a protective guard may not be sufficient to prevent strong blows that could kill, and killing is one of the gravest sins.
