A woman recognizes purity by one of two signs: dryness (by inserting a cotton swab that comes out clean) or the white discharge (a white fluid that follows menstruation). If she sees either of these, she has become pure and must perform ghusl immediately. Some scholars have permitted a woman who experiences dryness within her usual period to wait for a day or half a day to ensure purity, unlike the white discharge which necessitates immediate action. Discharges unrelated to menstruation do not affect purity. If a woman doubts her purity, the default is that menstruation persists, and she is not required to make up the prayers she doubted. She should also ignore obsessive thoughts.
