Is it obligatory to recite the Qur’an in prayer (Al-Fatihah and what is easy thereof) with tajwid or tartil for one who does not know the science of Qur’anic recitation and cannot find someone to teach him? And what is the ruling on reciting the Qur’an with a recorded tape outside of prayer?

A Muslim must memorize Surat Al-Fatihah correctly, without altering a single letter or changing a vowel mark that would lead to a change in meaning (obvious deviation). As for the rules of Tajwid, such as nasalization (ghunnah) and elongations (mudud), neglecting them does not invalidate the prayer. However, scholars have stipulated the obligation of reciting the Qur’an with Tajwid in general. It is permissible to recite the Qur’an rhythmically after a reciter outside of prayer to learn Tajwid.
