What is the ruling on wasting time on actions that are not forbidden?

If wasting time is not in something displeasing to Allah, then it is not haram. However, a Muslim should not waste his time in something that brings no benefit. The Salaf disliked a Muslim wasting his time in something that does not bring him benefit in his religion or his worldly life. Diversion, play, and idleness from all work are permissible if they do not contain a prohibited element, but they are blameworthy and not approved by scholars because they are a waste of time in something that yields no worldly or otherworldly benefit. And whoever spends his day without a right fulfilled, or a duty performed, or glory acquired, or praise gained, or good established, or knowledge attained, has indeed wronged his day and oppressed himself.
