What is the ruling on reciting the Qur’an for the deceased? Are ongoing charities permissible for the living without their knowledge, with the intention of dedicating the reward to them? Is it permissible for a Muslim to supplicate to Allah Almighty to protect his family and say to Him: "Indeed, my family are a trust with You, O best preserver of trusts, so protect them for me, and do not let me see any evil or harm befall them"? And is this considered a challenge to Allah Almighty?

The gifting of the reward of recitation and acts of worship to the deceased is a matter of scholarly disagreement. The fatwa (definition) issued is that any act of worship whose reward is gifted to the deceased will benefit them. As for the gifting of the reward of acts of worship to the living, this is also a matter of scholarly disagreement, and the preponderant opinion is that it is not legislated. There is no harm in asking Allah to protect one's family and supplicating with this phrasing.
