What is the ruling on backbiting in the case of complaining about someone who has wronged me?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Backbiting is a reprehensible trait forbidden by the Quran and Sunnah, and many scholars have counted it among the major sins. Backbiting is only permissible for a commendable purpose, such as vetting and validating Hadith narrators, or clarifying the state of those who openly commit sin, or seeking one's right from another through the ruler or judge, or for someone consulted in such matters. However, if it is intended for defamation or to attack a person's honor out of malice, this is not permissible and repentance from it is immediately obligatory.
