Can an individual who participates in investment funds with the intention of long-term investment pay Zakat on their money as Zakat al-Mustaghallat (Zakat on income-generating assets)?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Zakat is obligatory every year on money deposited in investment funds, whether the deposit is temporary or intended for speculation from the outset. Depositing money before investment does not exempt it from Zakat, for cash becomes subject to Zakat once it reaches the nisab (minimum threshold) and a hawl (full lunar year) has passed over it. The profit must be zakatable along with the principal amount if the principal itself reaches the nisab, or if it reaches the nisab when combined with other money or trade goods, and a hawl has passed over it. Speculative money is not analogous to shares that represent fixed assets.
