What is the ruling on obtaining infidel citizenship?

It is permissible for one who is in dire straits and finds no refuge (such as someone persecuted in their own country) to obtain the citizenship of a disbelieving nation, provided they can openly practice their religion and perform its rites. However, it is not permissible to obtain it for a purely worldly benefit.
