How is the Zakat calculated on money saved in a monthly association?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Zakat is obligatory on money saved in associations, subject to two conditions: reaching the nisab (minimum threshold) and the passing of a hawl (one lunar year).

The calculation of the hawl varies depending on the source of the money: 1. If the money is profit from trade or a portion of saved money that reaches the nisab: Its hawl is tied to the original capital. Upon the completion of the hawl, the profits are added, and the entire amount is subject to zakat at a rate of 2.5%. It is preferable to pay the zakat even if the turn for receiving the money has not yet come. 2. If the money is new and not profit from trade (such as a portion of a salary): The hawl for each installment begins when one lunar year has passed since its possession, provided it reaches the nisab on its own. It is permissible to advance the zakat payment for subsequent installments along with the zakat for the first installment for ease. It is preferable to pay the zakat even if the turn for receiving the money has not yet come.
