What is the legal ruling for one who utters the words of divorce involuntarily, without intention, as a result of obsessive compulsive whispers? And does divorce take effect in this case? And what is the remedy for such obsession?
The divorce you pronounced does not take effect, because the divorce of someone afflicted with obsessive thoughts (waswas) does not take effect, even if he utters it verbally, if it was not intentional; based on the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "There is no divorce in ighlaq." And obsessive thoughts can be removed by remembering Allah the Exalted, ignoring them, seeking refuge (in Allah), and by the one afflicted with obsessive thoughts remaining firm upon the truth and repelling what opposes it from the obsessive thoughts.
