Is it obligatory to extend the hands forward during prostration, and what is the ruling on praying behind someone who does not do so?

Placing the hands straight towards the Qibla during prostration (sujud) is a Sunnah, not an obligation. The prayer of someone who does not do so, or only does one of them, is valid. The prayer of a worshiper praying behind such an Imam is also valid.
