How should a Muslim act in the face of an affliction that is a punishment, such as hardness of heart or the "ran" (tarnish/rust on the heart)?

Whoever is afflicted with hardness of heart must hasten to treat it by frequently reciting the Noble Quran and contemplating its meanings, and by strengthening faith through good deeds, repentance, and frequent seeking of forgiveness.
