Is it permissible to put fish in the refrigerator alive, or must it be killed first?

The majority of jurists dislike throwing fish into fire alive, due to the torture involved, and they recommend waiting until it dies. The same applies to placing it alive in the refrigerator if it causes it pain. The Malikis, however, permit throwing fish into fire alive, and by analogy, their view permits placing it alive in the refrigerator. Nevertheless, it is preferable to wait until the fish dies before placing it in the refrigerator.
