Is the Udhiyah obligatory upon the pilgrim?

Scholars differ on the ruling of Udhiyah (sacrificial offering) for the pilgrim (Hajj):

- Hanafi school: It is not obligatory for the traveling pilgrim, but it is obligatory for the people of Mecca even if they perform Hajj. - Maliki school: There is no Udhiyah for the pilgrim because he is a pilgrim, not a traveler. - Shafi'i school: Udhiyah is recommended for the pilgrim and others. - Hanbali school: Udhiyah is permissible for the pilgrim. - Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, his student Ibn al-Qayyim, and Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen chose the view that the pilgrim does not offer Udhiyah; rather, he offers a Hadi (sacrificial animal for Hajj). If his family is in his hometown, then Udhiyah is incumbent upon them.
