Is it permissible for a woman to work as an English language teacher in a mixed-gender environment in her country, knowing that she loves this work and feels it is her mission in life?
A woman is not permitted to work in a place where there is prohibited mixing [between sexes] except out of necessity or severe need. It is better for a woman to remain in her home if her expenses are covered and she is not compelled to work, in compliance with Allah’s saying: "And abide in your houses." Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) was asked: "What is best for a woman?" She replied: "That she sees not men, and they see not her." However, if her expenses are not covered and she needs to work, previous fatwas have clarified the ruling on her working in a mixed environment out of need.
