What is the interpretation of the phrase: "Then kill yourselves" in verse (54) of Surat Al-Baqarah?

The intent of the verse is that they should kill one another. It is also said that it was a command for those who did not worship the calf to kill those who did. It has been reported that there is a consensus that none of the calf-worshippers were commanded to kill themselves.
