What is the etiquette of visiting scholars?

Scholars hold a high status in Islam, for they are the inheritors of the prophets and the bearers of the Sharia. Therefore, they must be revered, respected, and treated with good manners.

Etiquette of visiting scholars:

1. Have a pure intention, such as seeking knowledge and understanding of the religion, loving for the sake of Allah, and avoiding worldly aims.

2. Prepare for the visit by making an appointment in advance, and utilize open opportunities for visits.

3. Take care of cleanliness and elegance befitting scholarly gatherings.

4. Accompany people of virtue and serious goodness, and avoid bringing noisy children, while considering the spaciousness of the place.

5. Observe the etiquette of seeking permission, such as stating one's name, asking for permission three times in a gentle manner, and leaving if permission is not granted without clamor.

6. Observe proper etiquette in the scholar's presence: do not raise your voice, serve the شيخ (shaykh), respect him in discourse, avoid disturbing him with calls, listen attentively without interrupting him, do not belittle his opinion, do not ask excessively, and tolerate any potential shortcomings he may have.

7. Safeguard the scholar's reputation in his absence, thank him for his generosity, and do not offend him.
