Is it permissible to use the term 'ishq (passionate love/adoration) in reference to Allah, such as saying, "I am passionately in love with Allah"?

The term "ishq" (passionate love/ardent longing) should not be used in reference to Allah Almighty, because legal terminology is restricted to what has been revealed in the Qur'an and Sunnah. This term has not been mentioned in the divine texts, nor on the tongues of the Companions. Rather, the term "mahabbah" (love) is used, as in His Almighty's saying: "But those who believe are stronger in love for Allah," and "Allah will bring forth [in place of them] a people whom He loves and who love Him." Love (mahabbah) is a general category beneath which are varying types. What pertains to Allah Almighty are the terms that are befitting of Him, such as 'ibadah (worship), inabah (turning in repentance), and ikhbat (humility), not 'ishq or terms similar in meaning. A Muslim must adhere to the legal terminology that has been mentioned in the Qur'an and Sunnah.
