Is it permissible to give zakat to one's maternal grandmother? Is it permissible for a father to give his zakat to his mother-in-law? Is it permissible for a daughter to live with and eat with her poor mother, who lives on zakat, or must she buy her own food? Is it permissible to eat food that comes from zakat?

It is permissible to give zakat to a poor and needy mother-in-law. However, it is not permissible for a grandson to give his zakat to his grandmother unless he is not obligated to financially support her. It is permissible to eat from the grandmother's food that was funded by zakat, because once a poor person receives charity, it becomes their property and is no longer considered charity. They are then free to dispose of it as they wish. This is supported by the hadith of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) concerning the meat of Barirah, in which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "For her, it is charity; for us, it is a gift."
