What is the order in which the verses of the Qur'an were revealed?
The arrangement of the verses of the Quran in the Mus'haf is by divine command (tawqifi) from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and not according to the order of revelation. Revelation occurred according to events and occasions, whereas the order of recitation is by divine command from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. The verses were revealed according to events, and we may find verses that are placed earlier in the Mus'haf but were revealed later. However, their placement in the Mus'haf's arrangement is by divine command. For example, the verse "Read in the name of your Lord who created" (Surat Al-Alaq, 96:1) was the first to be revealed, yet its placement in the Mus'haf is later. And the verse "And fear a Day when you will be returned to Allah" (Surat Al-Baqarah, 2:281) was the last to be revealed, and it is at the beginning of Surat Al-Baqarah.
