Is the brown fluid that precedes menstruation by five to two days invalidating of prayer and fasting?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The fluids a woman sees before menstruation, which are not blood-colored, are not considered menses. Therefore, she should not abandon prayer or fasting on account of them, as Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "We did not consider turbidity (al-kudrah) and yellowish discharge (al-ṣufrah) to be anything." Abu Dawud added: "after purification," and Al-Bukhari titled a chapter: "Chapter on Yellowish and Turbid Discharges outside the Days of Menstruation." Umm Atiyyah's intention was that this was the practice during the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and this brownish fluid has the ruling of turbid discharge (al-kudrah).
