If you cannot weep during prayer, do you feign weeping?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Crying during prayer is a sign of devotion (khushu') and is encouraged, as indicated by Quranic verses and Prophetic hadiths. The Prophet (peace be upon him) and his companions indeed cried during their prayers. However, devotion is not limited to crying. Devotion is the tranquility and serenity of the heart. Praiseworthy crying is that which overcomes a person due to the tenderness of their heart. As for feigning crying, forcing tears, and making sounds, it is not permissible or appropriate and may invalidate the prayer.
