What should a friend do to console her friend whose mother has passed away and who is always crying?

Grief and weeping over the deceased are permissible if they are customary and not accompanied by wailing or discontent. Calamities expiate sins and elevate ranks. However, this weeping and grief should be proportionate and should not distract a person from their duties and obedience; rather, one must be patient. The advice for the grieving person is to engage in serious work such as learning, reading, reciting the Quran, and permissible entertainment, to seek refuge with Allah from worry and sorrow, and to avoid isolation and being alone with oneself. It is not permissible for a woman to mourn for a deceased person for more than three nights, except for her husband.
