Is zakat due on the total amount (12,000 Saudi Riyals) or on the first installment of it (1,000 Saudi Riyals), if a year has passed in Muharram 1432 AH on an amount that began to be collected monthly starting from Muharram 1431 AH?
The hawl (one-year period) stipulated for the obligation of zakat begins when the wealth reaches the nisab (minimum threshold). As for wealth that is added to the nisab, there are two cases:
1. It is a profit resulting from the nisab; in this case, it is zakatable along with it.
2. It is acquired wealth of the same type as the initial wealth, but not a profit resulting from the nisab. In this case, there are two options:
a. It is zakatable along with the nisab as an accelerated payment.
b. It is given an independent hawl, and zakat is paid on it when its hawl is due, even if it does not reach the nisab on its own, because it reaches the nisab when combined with the initial nisab.
The Shafi'is and Hanbalis adduced as proof the saying of the Prophet, peace be upon him: "There is no zakat on wealth until a hawl passes over it," and his saying: "Whoever acquires wealth, there is no zakat on it until a hawl passes over it with its owner."
