Is a Muslim rewarded for keeping up with global political news and scientific technology, and what intention should he have for that?

A Muslim is rewarded for reading scientific books and following the news of the Ummah if he intends good thereby, and strives to benefit the Ummah, rectify its affairs, and solve its problems. This is in compliance with Allah's command to develop the earth and utilize what He created therein, and as an effort to benefit Muslims. However, if this intention is not present, it is feared that he will not be rewarded for it.
