And how can the wife atone for this action, knowing that she does not know how much money she has taken over many years?

A woman is not permitted to take from her husband's money except with his permission, unless he is remiss in providing the obligatory expenditure for her and their children. In that case, she may take what is sufficient for her and her child, in a reasonable manner, without extravagance. Whoever takes from his money without permission or a legitimate justification is obligated to repent and return the money or seek his forgiveness, even if indirectly.
