The question

Is the Barclays Blue Rewards credit card considered halal or haram, knowing that it offers a monthly reward of £7 for depositing £800 monthly and having direct debits for deferred loans, and charges a monthly fee of £3? And what should I do with the amounts I have previously earned from these rewards if they are haram?

The answer

To rule on a specific card, its true nature must be understood. The card can either be a covered one, where the customer withdraws only up to their balance, and there is no harm in its fees. However, if the balance is in a current account, the rewards are usury (riba). But if it is in a savings or investment account, it is conditional upon verifying the permissibility of the investment. Alternatively, the card can be an uncovered one (involving lending from the bank), and for its permissibility, it is stipulated that the bank does not take any excess on the loan except for actual fees, and does not stipulate a penalty for late payment. If these conditions are met, the reward from the bank is permissible. If the reward is unlawful, it must be disposed of by giving it to the poor, and it is not permissible to deduct fees from it.
