What should one do if one sees evil in oneself and that evil overcomes good?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Man is weak; he is affected by both good and evil, but the element of good stirs his conscience towards remorse and returning to the truth. People differ in their ability to discipline themselves: some discipline themselves towards virtues and resist desires, while others follow them. The secret lies in a servant's struggle against his self and his desires to attain guidance, in accordance with His, the Almighty's, saying: "And those who strive for Us – We will surely guide them to Our ways." Ibn Al-Qayyim sees that striving against oneself and patiently enduring the bitterness of striving leads to the sweetness of worship, and that abandoning striving weakens the motive of religion and strengthens the motive of desire, and the struggling believer knows that good prevails.
