Is it permissible to participate in the funeral procession of a Kitabi (a Jew or a Christian) if that entails carrying the cross?

It is not permissible for a Muslim to participate in the funeral procession of a disbeliever, whether the disbeliever is a Person of the Book or not, a relative or a stranger. This prohibition is further emphasized by the presence of the cross, which is a ritualistic symbol of disbelief and embodies the great lie that Allah refuted with His words: "And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them."
