What is the ruling on one who drank water because of his inability to swallow his saliva due to a cold and fear of hiccups?
The religion of Allah is built upon ease, and among His mercies (Exalted be He) is the permission for the sick person to break their fast if fasting becomes difficult for them, and they must make up for it. It is not a condition that they be completely unable to fast; rather, it is sufficient that fasting causes them hardship or harm. The illness that permits breaking the fast is a severe one that worsens with fasting or delays recovery. The fear of contracting an illness is sufficient to permit breaking the fast. However, a minor illness that does not make fasting difficult does not permit breaking the fast. Therefore, if drinking water was to prevent an existing or an anticipated harm, there is no sin upon you, and you must make up the fast. But if it was out of negligence, then you must repent, seek forgiveness, and make up the fast without expiation, according to the majority of scholars.
