I live in a house furnished with a carpet that was cleaned, but I smell an impurity in several places. My husband suggested cleaning it again, but I am afraid the smell will remain. I am pregnant in my first months and my sense of smell is strong, and I pray on a special prayer rug. I have a small child who crawls on the carpet, and I wash his hands frequently. All praise is due to Allah. The purity of household carpets is not obligatory because lying and sitting on them do not require purity. A specific prayer rug can be designated for prayer. If urine odors are present, it can be washed, and if the odor remains, it is not significant. The mere movement of a child on the carpet does not make it impure, and there is no need to wash it because dry impurity does not transfer impurity. The impurity of the ground remaining despite dryness is the opinion of most jurists, and even if we consider purification by dryness, it is specific to the ground and walls, not to carpets and rugs.
