When does Islamic law permit a man to strike his wife? What if he strikes her in ways not permitted? What is the ruling on one who insults his wife, curses her, invokes curses upon her, and speaks ill of her family? Is the wife sinful if she invokes curses upon him? Is a husband allowed to treat his wife however he wishes, and must she accept without objection?

Allah has forbidden injustice and aggression, and striking one's wife without justification is an impermissible act of aggression. The Shari'ah has permitted non-injurious striking of a wife if she is disobedient (nashiz) after admonition and boycotting, based on the Almighty's saying: "As for those [wives] from whom you fear disloyalty, admonish them, forsake them in beds, and strike them." This striking must be non-violent, exclude the face, and involve no insults. Its purpose should be her rectification, and it should cease once the objective is achieved. Insulting, cursing, or speaking ill of a woman's family is not permissible. Therefore, both spouses must observe kindness, mercy, and overlook mistakes.
